When braces get in the way.

Decades ago, braces were clunky, silver, and often intrusive. They made trumpet playing impossible, and dating even less possible. But with today’s brace technology, and fashionable colors and choices, those worries may be over for your child.

Braces are better today. One relief for parents is that braces do not hurt as much as they did in the past. Not only do today’s braces move teeth more efficiently, but also they cause less pain to lips and cheeks than before. And much to the delight of children, braces can be available in different colors and styles. Talk with your orthodontist about options for your child.

If your child is an athlete, there’s no reason they cannot participate in their favorite sport and still have braces. Mouth guards can help protect your child’s mouth even during contact sports such as football. Your orthodontist can help prescribe the proper mouth guard for your child and his or her physical activity.

Brushing is even more important with braces. Of course brushing is vital to keep teeth and gums healthy and disease free. But with braces, food particles can collect more easily, and with shifting teeth, can get trapped and cause cavities. Encourage your child to brush and floss after every meal – even after snacks. Doing so will minimize the possibility of cavities and other issues.
