It’s just morning breath...right?

In a recent edition of the Journal of Pediatrics, experts agree that most bad breath in children is caused by nothing more than the mouth and nasal cavity. But there are still things to watch if your child begins to exude bad breath on an ongoing basis.

From the mouths of babes. The most common cause of childhood bad breath is poor dental hygiene. Bacteria can build and create unpleasant breath, even in adults. The best way to cure bad breath from poor oral hygiene is to improve the oral hygiene. Help you child brush and floss his or her teeth three times per day.

Smell for tooth decay. The early stages of a decaying tooth can often create bad breath. Watch for this and you may be able to help save your child’s teeth, eliminate the bad breath and forgo any dental work.

The nose knows what’s wrong. The nose is directly tied to the mouth for breathing and other functions. Therefore it makes perfect sense that when the sinuses are infected, it can cause bad breath. This includes colds and flu’s, as well as allergies such as hay fever. Talk with your child’s medical doctor about treatment to alleviate the symptom and the cause.
